Susan L Rowland

Dr Susan Rowland is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) at the University of Queensland (UQ). As a teaching-focused academic and Chair of the SCMB Teaching and Learning Committee she has a central role in the development and support of high-quality teaching and learning at UQ, including curriculum oversight and reform, student advising, and the nurturing of teaching research by her colleagues. Susan completed her PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Sydney, followed by a Human Frontiers in Science Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Connecticut. She joined UQ in late 2006 and began working in SoTL during her American Society for Microbiology Biology Scholars residency in 2011. Her research now focuses on teaching and learning activities that help students build content knowledge and professionalism through authentic practice. Susan is host and co-producer of Free Energy Radio, a program that brings the stories and voices of scientists to undergraduate students. She is also founder and Editor in Chief of SURJ@UQ (the Science Undergraduate Reseach Journal for UQ students). She currently leads the ALURE project, and OLT-funded National Leadership project. Susan’s work has been recognised by multiple awards including the 2014 The Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Beckman Coulter Education Award and a 2014 AUT Award for Teaching Excellence.
